In August 2024, Indo Ocean Project hosted the first-ever Oceans Talks event at our new Research and Education Center in Nusa Penida, marking an exciting milestone for our team. With over 100 passionate ocean enthusiasts, scientists, and community members in attendance, the event was a resounding success, kicking off what will become a quarterly tradition of sharing knowledge and sparking important conversations about marine conservation and sustainability.

The inaugural Oceans Talks series featured 14 thought-provoking presentations from an array of experts who touched on topics central to our mission. From cutting-edge science to community-driven initiatives, the diversity of topics engaged everyone present. Our lineup included speakers from Indo Ocean Project, alongside our esteemed partners and fellow marine organizations, each contributing their unique expertise.

Some of the key topics presented during the event included:

  • The latest research on coral health and restoration, highlighting local efforts and international collaborations.
  • In-depth discussions on sustainable ocean practices, examining how we can preserve marine ecosystems while supporting livelihoods.
  • The role of social attitudes in marine conservation and how shifting perspectives are driving policy and action.
  • Scientific innovations in understanding marine life, particularly focusing on the species that call Indonesia’s waters home.

Each talk was designed to inspire, inform, and challenge attendees to think critically about their relationship with the ocean. Speakers brought their real-world experiences and research, painting a vivid picture of the challenges and successes facing marine conservation today.

We’re thrilled to announce that Oceans Talks will continue as a quarterly event, with the next session slated for November 2024. These gatherings will serve as an open platform for knowledge-sharing and collaboration, offering our community and visitors the opportunity to learn from top ocean experts. Together, we aim to drive forward the conversation around ocean conservation, sustainability, and science in Indonesia and beyond.

Stay tuned for future announcements about upcoming Oceans Talks sessions, and if you’re in the area, we invite you to join us for the next round of engaging talks, thought-provoking discussions, and a deeper dive into the world of marine conservation.
