This generous grant will fund two full scholarships for our Divemaster and Research Diver Internship at our Bira Project location. Starting on January 19th, 2025, these 10-week internships promise to equip two inspiring young women with essential skills, certifications, and experiences to develop their careers as ocean professionals
A Scholarship to Transform Lives
Each scholarship is valued at 74,475,000 IDR and includes:
- A fully funded Divemaster and Research Diver Internship at Indo Ocean Project.
- Coverage of travel expenses to the Bira Project location.
- A food allowance during the internship.

A Collaboration from Supporting Communities
Daughters of the Deep
Daughters of the Deep (DOTD) is a global charity dedicated to empowering women to pursue careers in ocean professional. As a proud sponsor of this scholarship program, DOTD has provided vital funding to cover the scholars’ costs and has facilitated invaluable networking opportunities for their career growth. Furthermore, Rani Ekawaty, a member of the DOTD Indonesia team, will offer personalized mentorship to the recipients, focusing on academic and professional development.
Through their sponsorship, DOTD reinforces their mission to create meaningful pathways for women to succeed in marine sciences, contributing to a future where women play a leading role in preserving Indonesia’s rich marine biodiversity.
Scuba Schools International
Scuba Schools International (SSI) has demonstrated remarkable support for this initiative by waiving all fees for the SSI Rescue Diver, React Right, and Divemaster courses, along with their educational materials. This generous contribution significantly reduces the financial barriers to advanced dive training, ensuring that the scholarship recipients can focus entirely on their learning and development. SSI’s commitment to supporting this program highlights their dedication to fostering inclusive opportunities in diving and marine conservation.
Together, DOTD and SSI have played a pivotal role in making this scholarship program a reality, reflecting the collective strength of organizations working toward a shared vision of empowering women and safeguarding our oceans.
Mentorship for Academic and Career Growth
In addition to the training and certifications provided, the scholarship recipients will receive tailored mentorship from Rani Ekawaty, a renowned Fishery Scientist, Educational Consultant, and academic. Rani has over two decades of experience in fisheries science, specializing in human behavior and gender roles in small-scale fisheries. Her work promotes sustainable practices and effective fisheries management, both locally and globally.
Currently pursuing her PhD at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) at the University of Tasmania, Rani’s research explores social dynamics in fisheries to develop improved management practices. She has contributed to global initiatives like the Poseidon Project and the Global Ghost Gear Initiative, and worked with organizations such as TNC Indonesia and Ocean Conservancy to support sustainable fishing practices.
As a proud member of the Daughters of the Deep team, Rani will provide mentorship that focuses on academic development, career guidance, and professional skills, empowering the recipients to make meaningful contributions to marine conservation. Her personalized support ensures that these young women will not only gain valuable experience but also be equipped to shape the future of ocean conservation in Indonesia and beyond.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to The Fishmongers’ Company’s Fisheries Charitable Trust, Scuba Schools International, and Daughters of the Deep for making these scholarships possible. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for the oceans—and for the women leading the charge to protect them.
