Fun Diving in Nusa Penida
Already certified?
Join our guided dives in the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area, including manta ray sites, early morning mola dives, and occasional night dives.
Spaces are limited, so we recommend booking in advance.
East Penida Dive sites
The east side of Nusa Penida is less visited and offers a wilder, more remote diving experience. These sites are typically more advanced, with stronger currents driven by the powerful water movement of the Lombok Strait. While conditions can be challenging, they often come with better visibility and the chance to spot larger marine life in deeper, nutrient-rich waters.
Batumulapan
Batumulapan is known for its pinching currents and occasional rips, creating dynamic conditions that can attract larger pelagic species along the reef slope. In contrast, the shallower areas offer calmer sections rich in macro life, including nudibranchs, leaf scorpionfish, and shrimp gobies. The mix of conditions makes it a versatile site, but it’s important to dive it on the right tide.
-

-
Experience Level: Intermediate to Advanced
-
Conditions: Variable currents, occasional strong rips
-
Highlights: Pelagic encounters, macro life, soft corals
Karangsari
Karangsari offers a sloping reef with healthy coral and regular drift diving conditions. It’s less trafficked than some of the more popular sites, giving divers a more peaceful experience. Schooling fish, occasional pelagics, and excellent coral growth make it a rewarding dive when conditions line up. Currents here can build quickly, so timing is key.

Highlights: Mola sightings, schooling fish, fast drif
West Penida Dive sites
The west coast of Nusa Penida offers the greatest variety of dive sites on the island and some of the highest chances to encounter mola during their seasonal visits from June to October. With dramatic walls, nutrient-rich currents, and dense schools of fish, these sites range from gentle slopes to high-energy drifts, catering to a mix of experience levels depending on conditions.
Blue Corner
Known for its deep slope, strong currents, and occasional thermoclines, Blue Corner is an advanced dive site best suited for experienced divers. It’s one of the most reliable spots to encounter mola during the season (June–October), especially on early morning dives. Expect dramatic topography, schooling fish, and the possibility of larger pelagics passing by.

-
Experience Level: Intermediate to Advanced
-
Conditions: Can have surge and variable currents
- Highlights: Mola cleaning station, healthy corals, macro life, occasional turtles
Gamet Bay
A lesser-known site near Crystal Bay, Gamet Bay is a hidden gem with rich coral coverage and steep walls. It’s another seasonal mola hotspot, with fewer divers around. The bay is sheltered, but currents can still be present near the deeper sections and outer points.
-
Depth: 10–30m
-
Experience Level: Intermediate to Advanced
-
Conditions: Generally calm in the bay, occasional current
-
Highlights: Mola sightings (in season), dense coral, nudibranchs, reef fish
Ceningan Wall
Located on the western edge of Nusa Ceningan, this site features a dramatic vertical wall with deep drop-offs, soft corals, and occasional sightings of larger marine life. Currents can run strong and fast along the wall, making this a drift dive for more experienced divers.
-

-
Depth: 5–25m
-
Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate
-
Conditions: Light to moderate current (drift)
-
Highlights: Soft corals, macro photography, turtles, reef fish
North Penida Dive sites
The north coast of Nusa Penida is home to a long stretch of healthy coral reef, making it a favorite for relaxed drift dives and afternoon explorations. The sites here feature excellent coral coverage, frequent turtle sightings, and occasional pelagics cruising through the blue. Gentle longshore currents often build into faster drifts, offering both excitement and ease, especially for newer divers. You’ll also pass by several active coral restoration projects in the shallows—an encouraging sign of the reef’s resilience and recovery.
SD Point (Sekolah Dasar)
Named after the nearby primary school, SD is a long sloping reef that’s often dived as a gentle drift dive. It features excellent hard coral cover, frequent sightings of turtles, and healthy populations of reef fish. Visibility is usually good, and currents can range from mild to strong depending on the day.
-
Depth: 5–30m
-
Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate
-
Conditions: Drift dive, current varies
-
Highlights: Hard corals, turtles, schools of fish, occasional eagle rays
PED
Named after the village of Ped, located just in front of the dive site, this spot is known not only for its beautiful reef but also for the famous Balinese Hindu temple that overlooks the coast. Underwater, PED offers a gently sloping coral reef with excellent visibility and healthy coral growth. Drift conditions are common, with currents ranging from mild to moderate, making it a fun and scenic dive. Turtles, reef fish, and the occasional pelagic are regular sightings along the slope.
-
Depth: 5–25m
-
Experience Level: Intermediate
-
Conditions: Drift dive, moderate to strong currents
-
Highlights: Coral gardens, turtles, cultural connection to Ped Temple, occasional pelagics
Sental
Sental is another beautiful north coast site, offering a wide reef slope and excellent visibility. Stronger currents can bring in larger species like trevally and barracuda, while the reef itself hosts plenty of macro life, nudibranchs, and healthy coral coverage. It’s a great site for both wide-angle and macro photography.
-
Depth: 5–30m
-
Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate
-
Conditions: Drift dive, moderate to strong current
-
Highlights: Coral reef, macro life, schooling fish, occasional larger pelagics
South Penida Dive sites
The southern coastline of Nusa Penida faces the full force of the Indian Ocean swell—the same wave energy that makes Bali famous among surfers. This exposure shapes a dramatic, rugged underwater landscape, where hard and encrusting corals dominate due to constant wave action. The high energy also creates eddy currents that trap pockets of plankton, attracting filter feeders like manta rays, but occasionally also concentrating plastic runoff. While the reef itself may be less colorful, the topside cliffs and open ocean backdrop make this one of the most photogenic areas around the island. This is where you’ll find manta rays year-round, especially at the region’s two most iconic sites: Manta Point and Manta Bay.
Manta Point
Nusa Penida’s most famous dive site, Manta Point is a wide, rocky bay where reef mantas (Mobula alfredi) gather year-round to visit a cleaning station. The site is exposed to southern swells, meaning cooler temperatures, frequent surge, and variable visibility—but the chance to see mantas gliding just meters away makes it worth the effort.
⚠️ As one of the island’s most iconic dive sites, Manta Point can get crowded with other dive boats and groups. Please be prepared to see many other divers underwater, and focus on maintaining good buoyancy and respectful distance to ensure a positive experience for everyone—and for the mantas.
-
Depth: 5–25m
-
Experience Level: Beginner to Advanced (conditions vary)
-
Conditions: Surge, cooler water, exposed to swell
-
Highlights: Year-round manta sightings, cleaning station, dramatic topography
Labyrinth
Located near Manta Point, Labyrinth is named for its maze-like rocky formations, crevices, and swim-throughs that line the shallow reef. With patches of coral, surge channels, and open blue, this site can offer surprise encounters with mantas, turtles, or larger rays. It’s a more sheltered alternative when Manta Point is too rough, though still subject to surge.
-
Depth: 5–20m
-
Experience Level: Intermediate
-
Conditions: Surge, exposed
-
Highlights: Swim-throughs, rocky terrain, occasional mantas
Batu Pahet
Rugged and rarely visited, Batu Pahet is a south-facing site with steep reef walls, rocky shelves, and strong surge. Coral cover is sparse and mostly made up of hard and encrusting corals, but the terrain and current movement can attract larger fish, including passing rays and trevallies. This is a site for those looking to explore something off the beaten path, and conditions must be calm to dive safely.
-
Depth: 10–30m
-
Experience Level: Advanced
-
Conditions: Strong surge, swell exposure
-
Highlights: Remote and wild, potential for larger marine life, dramatic reef structure
Manta Bay
Shallower and more protected than Manta Point, Manta Bay is where mantas often feed near the surface, circling through pockets of plankton caught in the bay’s currents. Coral cover is sparse, and visibility can be reduced when plankton blooms are high—but this also brings in the mantas.
⚠️ Manta Bay is often shared with large groups of snorkelers and other divers, especially during peak hours. While encounters can still be magical, please manage your expectations, remain calm in the water, and follow our manta code of conduct to avoid disturbing the animals or other guests.
-
Depth: 5–15m
-
Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate
-
Conditions: Surge, variable visibility
-
Highlights: Manta feeding activity, accessible depth, often shared with snorkelers
Megafauna Encounters
Nusa Penida is one of the best places in Indonesia to encounter large and iconic marine species. Reef manta rays can be seen year-round, especially at southern sites like Manta Point and Manta Bay. From June to October, colder waters bring the chance to see mola (sunfish) at cleaning stations along the south and east coasts.
You may also spot reef sharks and other pelagic species at deeper or more exposed sites.
Read more to learn about the best time to dive, what to expect, and how to dive responsibly with these incredible animals.
Manta Diving
Graceful Giants of Nusa Penida

Nusa Penida is one of the best places in the world to encounter reef manta rays (Mobula alfredi), with resident populations frequenting the island’s southern cleaning stations. Our manta dives take you to sites like Manta Point and Manta Bay, where these gentle giants come to be cleaned or feed in the shallow, plankton-rich waters. On rare occasions, oceanic mantas (Mobula birostris)—the largest ray species—are also spotted cruising through the area.
We visit the manta sites 2–3 times per week, depending on ocean conditions. These sites are often exposed to strong surge and swell, and we choose the best days accordingly. Contact us to schedule your manta dive, and we’ll help you find the best window for safe and rewarding conditions.
To ensure ethical and sustainable encounters, all participants must agree to our strict Manta Code of Conduct before diving. This includes maintaining a respectful distance, avoiding physical contact, and never obstructing a manta’s path. We reserve the right to cancel dives without refund for any breach of this code. Protecting these vulnerable animals is our priority—and responsible diving ensures future generations can experience their magic too.
Please note: All divers visiting Manta Point with us are required to complete a one-time Meet the Manta’s of Nusa Penida prior to the dive. This course includes an online module and a pre-dive briefing and costs 300,000 IDR. Once completed, it does not need to be repeated for future dives. After completing the course, you’ll be eligible for the regular dive rate on all subsequent trips to Manta Point.

Searching for Mola's
Spotting the Ocean Sunfish in Nusa Penida

From June to October, Nusa Penida becomes one of the best places in the world to encounter the elusive mola (or ocean sunfish). These deep-dwelling giants make rare appearances at specific cleaning stations around the island—most famously at Blue Corner, Crystal Bay, and Gamet Bay—where they rise from the depths to be cleaned by reef fish. Known for their enormous, disc-like bodies and serene nature, molas are a breathtaking sight for even the most seasoned divers.
To maximize your chances of a sighting, we recommend our early morning Mola Dives, which are single tank trips departing at 6:00 AM. These dives are reserved for Advanced divers with 50+ logged dives, as they often involve strong currents, deep descents, and colder waters—sometimes dropping into the high teens or low 20s°C. We also run regular afternoon dives to Crystal Bay, where molas are occasionally spotted as well.
Best practices when diving with molas include keeping your distance, avoiding sudden movements, and staying low on the reef to avoid startling them. Respectful and responsible diving not only protects these gentle giants but also improves your chances of an unforgettable encounter. Get in touch with us for the best time and conditions to book your next Mola Dive adventure!

Diving in Nusa Penida
Nusa Penida has quickly become a dive destination due to its year round sightings of manta rays and seasonal appearance of the famous bumphead molas (ocean sunfish). Divers travel from around the world to dive the famous sites of Crystal Bay and Manta Point.
Your best chance to see molas are in the months June – October, while manta rays gather year round at their feeding grounds and cleaning stations on the south side of the island.
FAQ
Can I request a dive site?
Sorry, but we can not guarentee to accommodate your dive site requests. Our boat schedules are set based on our research targets so that dictactes where our boats go around 75% of the time.
How often do you go to Manta Point?
We go to Manta Point around 1-2 time per week, it isn’t necessarily on the same day. This is also weather dependent as we do not go to the South side of Penida when waves are over 1.8m or high winds are predicted. Safety First! (Science Second 😉 )
How many people can you take?
Our boat has a maximum capacity of 12 divers for double tanks dives and 15 divers for single tank dives.
Typically we have around 2-6 spaces available per day for our honored, non research guests.
How do I get to Nusa Penida?
Nusa Penida is our most accessible location located 2 hours from Bali’s busy Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS). There are regular international and domestic flights scheduled at this airport for easy connections.
Once you land in Denpasar (Bali) you will make your way to the harbour in Sanur. Depending on traffic this can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours. Boats depart from Sanur to Nusa Penida from 7am until 5pm daily. If you arrive after 1pm we recommend booking 1 night stay in Sanur with plans to travel to Nusa Penida the following morning.
The fast boat ferry from Sanur to Nusa Penida takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes, depending on weather conditions. Of the island’s two main harbors, Toya Pakeh is the closest to us.
If you need any assistance in booking you travel in Bali or Penida don’t hesitate to ask.
Can I volunteer to help with your research?
Unfortunetly we do not accept volunteers. This is for several reasons, the first being that volunteering is considered “work” to Indonesian Immigration and you require the correct VISA’s to do this.
The other reaons are mainly that we are not set up to take on short term volunteers, we have team of 10-12 interns at any given time plus our paid full time staff. Like any job, it takes 3-4 weeks to learn something new, and any short term volunteers are often not utilizes and use valuable resources. The pros don’t outway the cons.
But we do invite you the take part, ask questions, and learn from professionals onboard.
Are you hosting research trips everyday?
Our boat is used for research most days, with usually one day off each week. Even on research days, the boat still heads out — so you’re welcome to book your dives anytime.
